Monthly Group Swim Lessons

Monthly Group Swim Lessons

Swim Lessons at the YMCA are a wonderful way to get your kids engaged in an activity that will serve them for years to come. Whether your child is a beginner or ready to tackle more advanced stroke techniques, we have something for everyone.

Our instructors all work from the same curriculum to help with consistency between lessons. Using the same ‘language’, we are able to effectively communicate water safety strategies as well as important swim skill instruction.

Please note: Safety Around Water is intended for the 3-5 year old age group, and levels 1-6 are for the 6+ age group.

Check out the many offerings below and feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.

**Please Note** Due to the Availability of Instructors, lessons for each month are posted between the second and last weeks of the current session. For example: Lessons for September are made available the last week of August. The only exception at present is the Parent and Tot lessons which are available a few months in advance. We appreciate your understanding.

A: Parent and Tot Swim Lessons (6 mo-3 yrs)

Tillamook
2/4/26 - 6/24/26
VIEW

This class is interactive and social and designed to give the parent tools to help acclimate children 6 months to 3 years to the water.

Parents accompany children in the water, which introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water.

Using tools like songs and floating toys, your child will gain comfort in the water while starting to build some basic understanding of the language used in all our swim lessons to set them up for success in later years.

B: Transitional Tots

Tillamook
3/5/26 - 3/26/26
VIEW

Transitional Tots: Finding Their Fins

Transitional Tots is the perfect “bridge” program designed for children ages 2 to 4 who are ready to move beyond the constant lap of a parent but aren’t quite ready for the solo dive into independent lessons.

This class balances the comfort of having a parent nearby with the excitement of gaining personal water confidence. Our goal is to shift the parent’s role from “primary support” to “encouraging coach,” preparing your child for the Safety Around Water program.

What to Expect

In this class, we focus on the “gradual release” method. As your child’s skills grow, the physical distance between parent and child slowly increases.

  • Confidence Building: Children practice blowing bubbles, submerged exhales, and front/back floats with decreasing physical assistance.

  • The “Shadow” Technique: Parents transition from holding their child to “shadowing” them—standing arms-length away to allow the child to feel their own buoyancy.

  • Safety Fundamentals: Introduction to basic water safety rules, “Red Light/Green Light” listening skills, and how to safely exit the pool independently.

  • Social Interaction: Group activities that encourage children to follow instructions from the YMCA instructor rather than just their parent.

Class Goals

  1. Reduce Separation Anxiety: Softens the transition to independent lessons.

  2. Develop Physical Autonomy: Teaching the child that the water (and their own body) can support them.

  3. Parent Education: We teach parents the proper way to support a developing swimmer without becoming a “crutch.”

The Milestone: By the end of the session, the goal is for your child to feel comfortable performing basic skills with the parent standing on the pool steps or deck, ready to graduate to the 3-5 year old Safety Around Water class!

C: Children's Safety Around Water (3-5 yrs)

Tillamook
2/2/26 - 2/26/26
VIEW

Safety Around Water is an essential life skill. This is an independent program designed to reach children at risk of drowning and teach them basic water safety skills, but the skills that it develops overlaps with those taught in the YMCA Swim Basics Levels 1-3 program.

Students who complete Safety Around Water are prepared to transition directly into the rest of our swim lessons to continue learning.

This program is geared towards our 3-5year old children.

Parents are not required to get in the water but must remain on the pool deck for the duration of the lesson.
